The Greater London TaeKwondo Academy is affiliated with the International TaeKwondo Federation (ITF). ITF was founded in March 1966 by Genral Choi Hong Hi in Seoul, South Korea.
Yes. We teach the TaeKwondo tenets of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit. We have students that joined as children and persevered through to their black belts. They are really good people, and we think TaeKwondo helped. And it’s really fun having the whole family involved!
You get out of it what you put into it. And most classes you’ll have the opportunity for an excellent cardiovascular workout.
Yes you can. Everyone has different levels of flexibility, and it is an important part of fitness, and over time it will improve. A lack of flexibility will not affect your ability to fully take part our classes.
We take children as young as three.
The ITF grading system consists of six solid coloured belts (white or 10th grade, yellow, green, blue, red and black or 1st dan) with coloured 'tips' in between . Beyond the black belt are the 8 further dan grades that lead to Grand Master (9th dan).
Like any sport, injuries are possible. By teaching correct technique as a first priority, injuries are minimised. We always make sure we warm up and skilful use of our bodies is not an add-on - it's central to TaeKwondo.
Our class charges are modest and you're welcome to attend free taster sessions to see if it's right for you. If you decide to become a regular you'll need a uniform.
All classes are mixed-age, mixed-rank. The instructor manages the class depending upon which students are present. This is actually more challenging for the instructor, but results in opportunities for higher belts to help lower belts by example and direct assistance. Many of our classes have men, women, boys, girls, and ages 3 to 60+!
When you first begin, just wear comfortable clothing. tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt is fine. If you decide to train beyond the tasters sessions we will guide you with regards to getting a uniform.
We encourage families to start together. When you all start at the same time it means you can encourage and support each other.
